One of four brothers who served, James served in the Pacific during WWII. - Grandson of Wi Taiawa

World War II (Pacific)

Jim enlisted in June 1942 and was posted to the Pacific as a gunner in November 1942.  He served in the Guadalcanal area.  In May 1944 Sonny McCabe wrote to his brother Jim asking him not to enlist in the 28 Maori Battalion due to the number of brothers in the Battalion getting killed.  Jim returned to New Zealand in August 1944.
