Star Gossage - Multi Media Artist

Star Gossage - Multi Media Artist

Review from Page Blackie Gallery:

"Star Gossage commenced her study at the Otago Polytechnic School of fine Arts Dunedin in 1991. While there she became involved with a highly innovative group of young Maori art students and experimented with a wide variety of media including films and theatre production.

In 1995, she graduated with a Diploma of Fine Art majoring in Computer Art and Film from the Otago Polytechnic School of Fine Arts, Dunedin. After graduating she returned to Pakiri to establish her current home and studio. Over the past 10 years she has published a collection of stories, produced a short film, worked as an actor for several film productions and confirmed her reputation as one of the most important young Maori artists of this decade.

Star's paintings of mystical, transitory figures gazing out of primordial landscapes, first captured the imagination of both buyers and art critics in Auckland some years ago. Since then, she has mounted a number of highly successful solo exhibitions, as well as participating in a number of group projects involving painting, sculpture, theatre and film. The emotional intensity of her compelling images has quickly established her as an exceptional talent. Her inclusion in 'Taiawhio', a ground breaking exhibition of contemporary Maori Art, and the companion publication, 'Taiawhio-Conversations with Contemporary Maori Artists' (2002), gave official recognition to her considerable achievements to that point.

In 2006 Te Papa acquired her painting 'Moana' for the national collection, highlighting her as an artist to watch both now and into the future"

Whilst working on her next exhibition, she is also helping our Marae put together it's own Art Auction to be held later in 2013. We know her skills and contacts in this area will help make this event exceptional. Details of both Star's Exhibition and the Omaha Marae Art Auction, will be advertised as dates and details are confirmed.

Star is our newly appointed Marae Committee Secretary.
